Read below for how we support veterinarians.

What

Compounding is the process of using special techniques to mix or alter ingredients to make customised medicines for people or animals.

How

This process is undertaken by qualified pharmarcy technicians and pharmacists.

Why

The benefits of compounded medicine include:

  • Changing the form of a medicine (for example from capsule to liquid) to make it easier to swallow/administer
  • Customising the strength of medicine to one that is not readily available
  • Removing an ingredient that someone may be allergic to
  • Customising flavours and sweeteners to suit personal preference
  • To continue supply of a medicine if something is unavailable long term

Compounding Animal Medication Offers Unique Benefits:

  • We can adjust the strength and dose of medications to ensure the correct dose is given to the animal based on its weight, species and medical condition. This enables accurate medicating for pets of all sizes, including those very small or large

  • Also, some vets use human medicines where dosing may not be suitable for pets. Crushing and splitting tables may not give the accurate dose required for the pet
  • Often, changing the flavour of the medication can help when a patient is refusing their medication

  • CompoundLabs pharmacists can add flavours such as beef, chicken, tuna or liver to medications

  • This improves palatability and makes it easier for pet owners to give medication to their pets

  • Not all flavours are appropriate in every formulation. CompoundLabs can advise the prescribing veterinarian of a flavour which may be better for masking the taste of the required medication

Most palatable flavours by species reference list:

  • Canines: Chicken, Bacon
  • Felines: Chicken, Bacon
  • Birds: Apple, Banana
  • Horses: Apple, Banana
  • Rabbits: Banana, Apple

  • Transdermal preparations are an easy alternative for delivering medications for where capsules/tablets are a challenge to administer

  • These are applied directly via a metered dose syringe or topical applicator on to the animal's skin can be prepared for an array of medicines

Our team can combine multiple medications into one product. This simplifies treatment for pet owners and reduces the number of separate medications the animal needs to take if appropriate.

  • At times regular medications may be temporarily out of stock. Veterinarian medicine manufacturers also sometimes discontinue the production of medication due to decreased demand

  • CompoundLabs can often fill the gap when it comes to discontinued medications
  • Administering capsules and tablets to animals can be a traumatic experience for pets and humans alike. We offer a wide variety of dosing formats

  • These can be customised to the species being treated and to the individual animals habits

Dosing Formats include:

  • Capsules
  • Topical or Transdermal Preparations
  • Oral Pastes
  • Powders (to be mixed with food)
  • Oral Liquids
  • All our compounding work is carried out by trained compounding pharmacists and technicians who have expertise in preparing medications for animals

  • The pharmacists must also follow strict regulations and guidelines set by regulatory bodies

  • This ensures the safety, efficacy and quality of the compounded medication
